Breakfast Television: Dive Into Spring Organizing!

Dive Into Spring Cleaning

Are you putting off Spring Organizing because you just don’t know where to begin? It’s easy to do if you follow these tips from my Breakfast Television Calgary segment. (Sorry, video is no longer available 🙁 )

Spring brings a sense of renewal with it so it’s a perfect time to give your home a refreshed look.

Let’s dive into the steps that will help you clear out Winter and make room for Spring …

Divide and Conquer

Divide & Conquer

It can feel overwhelming just thinking about organizing your entire home so first of all …

You don’t have to do it alone. Get your family involved – they’re contributing to the accumulation so it’s only fair to get their help clearing it out.

Instead of approaching it with dread – make it enjoyable. If you have children, make it a game. “Who can get rid of 10 things the fastest?” Grab a basket, set the timer, and GO!

Turn on the tunes – get your groove on while you’re clearing out the stuff.

Secondly …  break it down into smaller projects. It’s too hard to do the entire house, but you can do a room or an area at a time.

You can organize an entryway. You can organize a closet.

Be sure to stay with it until it’s done.

Eliminate The Superfluous

Eliminate the Superfluous

Don’t let your stuff hibernate another season and take up valuable space. If you didn’t wear it or use it this past season, you’re not going to next year.

It’s time to let go of some stuff.

Arm yourself for the job by gathering tools like boxes and bins. Make some signs you can attach to the outside of the containers to help you with the sorting process.

You can download my sorting signs here:  Sorting Signs

Make sure to have plenty of trash bags on hand too.

As you go through your stuff ask yourself:

  • Do I need this?
  • Will I really ever use this again?
  • Can I toss it, recycle it, sell it, or give it away?

If you don’t use it, need it, or love it – it’s time to get rid of it.

One In One Out

One In – One Out

This little rule works wonders for keeping clutter under control.

Springtime doesn’t come easily in many parts of the country so it’s not as easy as switching from Fall/Winter to Spring/Summer. But you want to avoid having too much stuff in your space.

So get your spring on by gradually making way for the warmer weather.

As you bring out the lighter outerwear, put your heavy-duty parka away.

If you bring out running shoes – put a pair of boots away.

And it’s not just clothing, it’s your decorations too. Put away all those fall and holiday decorations so you can make way for the prettier season-appropriate adornments.

One in – one out. – it’s simple and it works.

Get your Spring on – little by little, you’ll get there.
